Oliver Andre Rosto – A Life Dedicated To Aviation

This is the fantastic story of the life of a norse-american aviator. He was born in Hemne (Norway) in 1881 and immigrated to the USA in 1902, where he started to work as a mechanic in a world dominated by a new invention: the automobile. But he soon got interested in engines and was eager to construct his own aircraft to become one of a new breed: an aviator. He managed in 1913 to fly his own designed and built monoplane, the Rosto Monoplane, off the ice of Lake Superior in Duluth and from there on his life was dedicated to aviation. He gave up his job as automobile mechanic and moved to New York, where he started to work for Curtiss and the U.S. Navy as aircraft and engine inspector. During the twenties of the 20th Century he was plant manager of the Ericson Aircraft Ltd in Baltimore, before he started in 1928 his twenty-five-year career in the Civil Aeronautic Authority. At the age of 71 he was still not interested in give up aviation and started to work for the Aircraft Engineering & Maintenance Company – AEMCO, a subsidiary of the famous Transocean Air Lines. This company was owned by the Orvis Nelson, a man with Norwegian roots as well and also coming from Minnesota.

There existed many myths around Rosto’s life and the author has managed to check them all. The story here has been presented in easy to read way without losing an eye for details. It is also a look into the development of aircraft inspection as it developed between 1928 and 1952. Rosto died in 1972 at the age of 90. He certainly had a life dedicated to aviation.

Rob J.M. Mulder, the author, has published five aviation books and this is the fourth in the series called “A Piece of Nordic Aviation History”.

Dette er den fantastiske historien om en norskamerikansk flyver. Han ble født i 1881 i Hemne (Norge) og emigrerte i 1902 til Duluth, USA. Her begynte han å jobbe som sjåfør og bilmekaniker. Han var meget interessert i motorer og var interessert å snart finne en jobb i en luftfartsverden og ble en av de nye heltene: en aviatør – en flyver. I februar 1913 sto hans eget designet og ferdigbygde monoplan klar for sin første tur. Den fant sted fra isen på Lake Superior og fra denne dagen st hans liv i luftfartens tegn. Han stoppet å jobbe som bilmekaniker i 1916 og flyttet til New York for å jobbe hos Curtiss Aeroplane & Motor Co. og U.S. Navy som inspektør av fly og flymotorer. På 20-tallet jobbet han som direktør for Ericson Aircraft Ltd. i Baltimore, for deretter å jobbe for de amerikanske luftfartsmyndighetene. Han var blant annet med på sertifiseringen av Boeing 314 Clipper og 307 Stratoliner. I en alder av 71 byttet han jobb og begynte å jobbe for Transocean Air Lines og dets datterselskap AEMCO.

Mange myter rundt Oliver Andre Rosto har blitt bekreftet og avkreftet og forfatteren har klart å sjekke alle av dem. Historien har her blitt fortalt på en fin måte uten å miste et øye for detaljer. Det er samtidig en oversikt over hvordan flysikkerheten utviklet seg i perioden 1928 til 1952. Boken presenterer hans liv helt til den siste flyvningen i en alder av 87 år! Rosto døde i 1972, 90 år gammel. Nesten hans hele liv var viet til luftfart.
